Alert: 3-23-2018

Crafton PD has taken two different fraud/scam reports over the past couple of days. In one incident a resident was talking to someone they thought was their friend on a messenger service on a social media website. The person was talking about a $50,000 home improvement grant and requested the resident to send $1,000 to pay for the fees associated with the grant. The resident realized at that point that it was a scam and quit communicating with the other person. No information was obtained by the scammer.

In another incident a resident responded to an ad on his computer which requested him to place decals on his vehicle and he will be sent money. The resident stated that the ad was for 5 Hour Energy and that he would receive a check for $2,550 in the mail. He was advised to deposit the check and keep $500 for himself and mail the remaining balance back to the sender. The resident spoke to a male with an Indian accent on the phone and advised him that this sounded like a scam. The male with the accent hung up the phone.
